Summer Camp

On Friday, August 15th,  eighteen participants in the "Bigfoot" Summer Camp run by the Regional District of Nanaimo took a afternoon tour of Grandon Creek. The children, ranging in age from 6 to 12 years, met streamkeepers Faye Smith and David James at the top of the trail.

The group, accompanied by five RDN staff, walked down the trail looking at the trees and vegetation in the riparian zone. The caissons and fish ladders in the parking lot at the Crescent Road entrance were of particular interest, as were the newly constructed spawning and rearing pools. Despite a search, no coho were visible that day!  Their excursion was apparently the "adventure" highlight of the week.

Certification:
2011 Streamkeeper Course

2011 Streamkeepers CourseOn the weekend of April 30, sixteen volunteers gathered to learn more about fish habitat and life cycles from well known fish biologist Dave Clough. Organized by the MVIHES, the session provided an illuminating and enjoyable introduction to the varied species of fish which reproduce in Vancouver Island streams and rivers. It included extensive visual presentations, a review of the streamkeeper handbook and two field site visits – one to conduct water quality tests and the other to obtain samples of the insects which form the diet of fish.

Graduates receive Streamkeeper certification and are now well prepared to undertake fish habitat protection and improvement projects. This course is typically offered annually by either the Mid Vancouver Island Habitat Enhancement Society (MVIHES) or Qualicum Beach Streamkeepers, with support and funding from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
